KEJOHANAN BADMINTON PIALA PUSINGAN TERBUKA KUALA LUMPUR 2013

This is the fourth installment of the junior tournament organized by Times Badminton Academy.

Aaron have just recovered from his ankle injury came back into competitive badminton a little rusty. He again cross swords with his nemesis Wong Vin Sean in the third round and this time went down after a close fight 29-30 to the determined 9 year old. Their head to head record now ties at 2 -2. Vin Sean continued with his fine form to become champion under this category.

Ryan made it to the third round as well in the U12 category to meet Pui Chai School player Lok Chong Ming. The match started evenly but as the match progressed, his couldn’t lift his game to match his opponent’s deft touches and lost 19 - 30.

In the U12 doubles, the brothers performed admirably marching up to semi-finals meeting Muhd Yusrizal / Izz Adli from Pro Badminton Academy. The brothers managed to take advantage of their opponent’s shaky start but towards the end, the bigger sized opponent overcame their gremlins and finished off the game in a flurry. As consolation, the boys collected their semi final medals for their effort.

This tournament is a good reality check. There is still some time for us to work on the boys’ specific areas that needed refining. We will attempt to peak them at the right time for their November major tournaments.

PIALA PUSINGAN TAN SRI K.R. SOMASUNDRAM SEMPENA HARI MERDEKA 2013

This is the third junior tournament of the year organized by Times Badminton Academy.

Aaron continues to progress well in the U10 category reaching the final but lost to Thaanesh Devar from Melaka by one solitary point. The break through came in the second round, when Aaron beat his nemesis, Wong Vin Sean 30 - 28, as the latter was the defending champion in the second tournament by Times BA, with Thaanesh Devar, the runner up. Aaron’s head to head record with Vin Sean now stands 2 – 1 in his favour but the SSBA club player remains a tough opponent and should not be taken lightly.

Ryan made it to the third round in the U12 category to cross sword with Chong Ee Jack again. Ee Jack was the same player who halted Ryan’s run in the first Times BA tournament last April. Ryan could not bring up his game as Ee Jack was visibly a much improved player since the first time they met. Ryan’s head to head record with Ee Jack is now trailing at 0 -2.

In the U12 doubles, the brothers qualified for the semi-finals by beating their team mates, Lee Jia Quan/Abdul Rahman in a closely contested match 30 - 28. This was a significant win for the brothers as they claim their bragging rights in the Putrajaya camp. However, their semi finals vs Putrajaya’s circuit pair Clement Lau/Ho KaTim was beyond the brother’s level. The brothers could have gotten a more respectable score if not for Aaron conserving for his U10 singles final.

Overall, I can say it was a satisfactory tournament for the brothers. Aaron won two medals, silver for U10 singles with cash RM70 and bronze for U12 doubles, while Ryan took home a bronze medal for the U12 doubles. They displayed better maturity in their doubles partnership thanks to the private trainings albeit only in its infancy stage but is gradually seen to be bearing fruit.

Times BA will again run it’s forth installment in 19th October and we are looking forward to it.

KEJOHANAN BADMINTON PBVKL, PBWKL, JABATAN BELIA DAN SUKAN 2013

MBA Semi-Finalist and Coach Andre (L), Erik & Alex (R)
This junior tournament was organized by Times Badminton Academy. In support of their new courts launching in Kepong, MBA sent their full force of over 50 participants.

Aaron continues to make great strides in the boy’s singles under 10 category. In his semi final match, he lost only by a whisker 29 – 30 to allow Daryl Foo of Pei Chai Chinese School PJ to squeeze past him into final and became the champion. It was such a satisfaction to see Aaron played with so much confidence and elegance so much so that I did not interfere with his games en route to the semi-final.

Ryan finds it tough going in the under 12 category went down fighting in the second round after receiving a first round bye. His court coverage was felt wanting as can be seen from his net play was mostly out of reach. We were really puzzled with his lackluster performance of late.

For doubles, the coaches decided to split the boys up which I though was a good move for a change. Aaron partnered Chai Chun Hong both 10 years old while Ryan paired with Daniel Yee, who is 12 years old. Surprisingly, the younger pairings were the ones who put together a good run until quarter finals.

Although Ryan and Daniel had a free passage to the 3rd round but their challenge fizzled out with a rather disappointing performance.

I think Aaron caught much positive vibes from his partner Chai Chun Hong who was the runner-up in the previous 13th Inter-MBA tournament last Dec 2012. Both had a natural chemistry to blend together and it was a delight to see them psyched themselves up while enjoying their tournament.

Ryan’s glaring lack of footwork speed was troubling. He seemed resigned despite trying his best but the fact was his best was not enough. We are still putting special emphasis in this area in his trainings even if he needed more time to get it right.
